My little Bitcoin investment & mining experience

I do not count the time I looked at Bitcoin in the past since about 2011-2012. Every time I started thinking about mining there was an investment to do (like GPU, then ASIC) and I never trust enough this money to make this investment. So as a consequence I never jump into this techno by the past, more than to understand how it works and learn.

Now Bitcoin in reaching some unexpected peaks ( > 15,000‚ā¨ ) and it really looks like a bubble everyone is talking about, so as a mad man, I through it was the perfect time to start playing with this money. Trust me, as a guy who started investing in Internet technologies in 2001, you may never follow me on such decision !

Starting playing with this was an interesting learning opportunity, so this post will relate this experience and the different things I found in the bitcoin ecosystem.

CES2016 – why visiting ?

ces2016bisThe most frequent question in the past week was “How was CES?”, ¬†“What did you learned ?”, “What did you preferred?”, “Is there an interest to go at CES for us?” … I tried in this post to get, not a direct answer to these questions but direction where anyone can find the reason to visit or to exhibit to CES. You may add some more but they are the one that flashed my mind when visiting. Do not hesitate to complete in comment.

Montpellier Startup WeekEnd

magicSquare startup weekend

magicSquare startup weekend

This weekend it was my first StartupWeekend I had kind of event past year having two bootcamps with my usual company for internal startup contest. By-the-way, the startup weekend is a little bit different.

That was a really nice experience I recommend. Basically, we came with some friend with a idea about providing a gaming environment for children where boy & girls can craft their own world and animate it thanks to the brick we are providing, using a programming language composed by domino they can manipulate. They won’t use any screen, only wood & plastic stuff that interacts with their crafted world.

After pitching this, we created a team by “hiring” people found in the crowd of participants. Some was from non selected ideas, some has came by curiosity and we got a nice mix of skills to start hacking the idea. Hacking the business model, hacking the technical solution…

After 2 days of intense work we had a final pitch where the top 3 of ideas has been selected by a jury and got some prizes. Even if our team has not been selected, we had a really great days seen all these nice ideas transformed in a weekend ; starting from quite nothing to become a credible business to develop.

We went to kickstart an idea, hack it, confirm hypothesis, meet people, meet future clients… and get fun ! for all of this it was a great success I’m happy to have done and to share this spirit ; here is a video we made during the event !

Private Copy tax

As you may know, in France as in a lot of other countries, we are  paying a Tax for private copying, this tax is printed nowhere like State Tax but it exists as a part of each of the storage product we are buying, even if this product is never use to store any copy of your music & video. This is also payed to store your original Mp3 like in an iPhone, iPod for example. This tax does not help the gaming and software industry even if this is where it made sense to apply it some decade ago before it has been locally destroyed.

This tax is apply to many device and grow regarding the size of the storage space. The price per GB is reviewed yearly and generally become higher and higher. The following Graph (copied from numerama) is showing how many euro has been transfered from consumer to music & movie industry in France during last 25 years.

This is about 181M‚ā¨ / year actually with an interesting growth which is also something like 3‚ā¨ per French and also about 7‚ā¨ per family. This money is going directly to the artists and it is like, according to different sources,¬† if we buy 7 album per family per year. In my point of view it is more than the average.

Then, coming the question ? what is the right i get for this price… actually ?

√† suivre !
